The ingredients needed to make South African milk tart:
  1. Take 3 tbsp melted butter
  2. Take 3 1/2 cup milk
  3. Get 2 cup crushed biscuits (Marie or other)
  4. Make ready 2 eggs
  5. Take 1/2 cup sugar
  6. Make ready 2 tbsp flour (heaped)
  7. Get 2 tbsp maizena or other corn flour(heaped)
  8. Make ready 2 tbsp butter
  9. Take 1 powdered cinnamon

This popular South African milk tart qualifies as one of those quick and easy tarts to whip up in a pinch. A traditional tart which is loved by young and old alike. Children especially love the filling as a dessert. Stir in margarine and pour mixture into ready-made pie shells.

Instructions to make South African milk tart:
  1. Mix crushed biscuits with the melted butter and press into a pie dish.
  2. Heat 3 cups milk with sugar and butter, setting aside the other 1/2 cup for later.
  3. Separate eggs, beat yolks and add to the milk.
  4. With the 1/2 cup milk which was set aside earlier, mix flour and maizena to a paste.
  5. Add to the mixture, always stirring.
  6. Remove from heat.
  7. Beat egg whites to a stiff peak, then fold into the milk mixture.
  8. Pour into crushed biscuit base, sprinkle with cinnamon.
  9. Allow to cool, and enjpy!

Children especially love the filling as a dessert. Stir in margarine and pour mixture into ready-made pie shells. Milk tart (or Melk Tert) is a South African dessert pie. A sweet pastry crust is filled with a custard filling and topped with a generous dusting of cinnamon. Some milk tart recipes call for the custard to be baked but my favorite version is unbaked custard gently flavored with almond extract.
