How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we ought to keep away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for raising your mood. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, along with improving your mood, can be a superb protein source.

If you wish to beat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling hungry can actually bring you down! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were just anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood also!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these suggestions instead.
