Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

A lot of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and feel happier!

Make a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling starved can be awful! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were just anticipating to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
