How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, could boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you are wanting to feel better. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all actually excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can really help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become better. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these hints instead.
